Film Crew Club Intermediate

Over the last 10 years, the media landscape has changed dramatically. Social media apps and filmmaking tools have become a fundamental part of our digital lives. Young people learn, socialize, explore their identities and engage with the world through media platforms. In response to these developments, Film Crew Club offers hands-on classes in which we work with cameras, iPads and smartphones to explore animation and live action filmmaking. Students get a chance to act, direct, script, film, animate, edit and create special effects in a wide range of media formats. We edit the material created in class and screen final films each week to students. This creates a dynamic feedback loop that empowers both learning and engagement.

Our classes include history lessons that teach students how our media systems have evolved as well as game based exercises in which children are encouraged to ask: who made this? For whom? What messages are being conveyed? How does it make me feel? Playful, dialogical approaches to these discussions help to engage and empower children. By making and viewing media together, students learn, first hand, how to look at it critically as well as how to engage with it safely and ethically.
