Film Crew Club Beginners Term 2

Over the last two decades our media landscape has been evolving at breakneck speed. Social media apps and content creation tools have become a fundamental part of our digital lives. Young people often learn, socialize, explore their identities and engage with the world through media. In response to these developments, our teachers aim to meet students where they are and to engage them in a dynamic, media making process while also encouraging them to reflect on the impact (positive or negative) media can have on us all.
To do this, we offer hands-on classes in which we work with cameras, iPads and smartphones to explore animation and live action filmmaking. Students are given a chance to act, direct, script, film, animate, edit and create special effects. We work with a wide range of tools and materials including, paper, clay, Lego, editing software, video apps, and AI tools for media generation. The films created in class are edited by our team and screened back to students each week. This creates a dynamic feedback loop that empowers both learning and engagement.
Our classes also include history lessons that teach students how our media systems have evolved as well as game-based exercises in which children are encouraged to ask: Who made this? For whom? What messages are being conveyed? How does it make me feel? Playful, dialogical approaches to these discussions help to cultivate a critical mindset as well as stimulate students to think about how to engage with media safely and ethically.
Our Beginner programme introduces students to the basics of filmmaking before launching into more complex projects. We advise those who have never attended our classes or who have only attended one term to continue in the Beginners club. We do our best, however, to adjust our lessons based on the experience level of students in each group.
